Play & Healing at the Intersections
Conversations on Creativity and Liberation
Mark-making that is focused on process rather than product is incredibly powerful and healing. Through smearing paint around, the squish of glue, and cutting out this and that, there's something that happens... It's being in the moment, a coming home, and can take you to new places all at the same time. Mark-making and mess-making are such a wonderful way to take some time to connect with play, permission to be willfully imperfect, and to hear your own voice. It is fun work and healing work. It is an experience that invites exploring possibilities and even creating new worlds. You don't have to be an experienced artist or think of yourself as an artist at all. It takes no technical skill to art journal. You can even choose whether you want to experiment with paint, paper, markers, pens, crayons, or all of the above.
Play & Healing at the Intersections is an invitation to engage in the healing work of mark-making at the intersections of our unique identities. For many of us, there are few places where we get to be and feel our whole selves in one place. Typically, for our own safety, we learn survival mechanisms that allow us to navigate oppressive systems. We learn to approximate and preform whiteness + maleness + cis-ness + hetero-ness + wealthiness + abled-ness + neurotypical-ness, often at the expense of where our identities diverge from those.
As we make marks together, I will be interviewing guests about their thoughts and experiences around creativity + liberation. In this context of mark-making, community, and discussion, my hope is to create a nourishing and fortifying experience that will give us practice with unlearning the ways we've internalized oppressive ideals and sustain us for the long haul work of systemic change.
