Play and Healing at the Intersections: Art Journaling 2021
Mark-making and mess-making are such a wonderful way to take some time to connect with play, permission to be willfully imperfect, and to hear your own voice. It is fun work and healing work. You don't have to be an experienced artist or think of yourself as an artist at all. It takes no technical skill to art journal. You can even choose whether you want to experiment with paint, paper, markers, pens, crayons, or all of the above.
Play and Healing at the Intersections is an invitation to engage in the healing work of mark-making at the intersections of our unique identities. For many of us, there are few places where we get to be and feel our whole selves in one place. Typically, for our own safety, we learn survival mechanisms that allow us to navigate oppressive systems. We learn to approximate and preform whiteness + maleness + cis-ness + hetero-ness + wealthiness + abled-ness + neurotypical-ness, often at the expense of where our identities diverge from those.
For the duration of the August and November session, you will receive a weekly email prompt around an guiding theme along with a couple of questions and loosely guiding thoughts to carry with you through the week. These prompts are intended to inspire some awareness or curiosity that you can explore in your art journal. You are free to play and interpret each prompt as you wish. The goal is to experience freedom, play, and whole-ness. Here are the weekly themes:
They read like a poem, don't they!
Each week, we will create together on Monday, via Zoom, Friday we will share. Times are 7-8:30 pm EDT but we can change based on what works better for the group.
